3.4 Flow rate and mean velocity

• Flow rate is the quantity of fluid flowing per unit across any section

• Can be expressed in term of volume of volume flow rate (discharge), mass flow rate (m) and weight flow rate

Volume flow rate

·         = flow velocity of the substance elements

·         = cross-sectional vector area/surface

Mass flow rate

•    or Q = Volume flow rate,

•     ρ = mass density of the fluid,

•     v = Flow velocity of the mass elements

•     A = cross-sectional vector area/surface
